To encourage new cyclist to road cycling, North Western Sydney Cycling Club (NWSCC) runs an introduction to bunch riding session on the first Saturday of each month. These sessions will provide you with the confidence and necessary skills to join our weekly novice group.

These sessions will be run by an experienced ride lead and on some occasions will coincide with a skills session hosted by our partners OneBody Health and Fitness, that provide a professional coach. The sessions will cover the following:

  • Safety briefing

  • Safe bunch riding techniques

  • Bunch ride calls

  • Braking

  • Sitting on

  • Rotating

  • Holding your line

  • Guidance on gear selection

What do I need to bring?

You should come along as if you were going for a normal bike ride. Therefore, you should bring: water bottle, spare tube, pump and snack. During winter you should dress warmly and have working front and rear lights.

What type of bike do I need?

We are a road cycling club and riders should have a road bike with drop handlebars for these sessions. We encourage the use of  cycling shoes with clipless pedals, however, these are not required for these sessions.

Where do we ride?

The bunch will leave The Local Shed Cafe at 6:30AM, and take the back streets to the M7 cycleway, and stay on the cycleway to the bubblers located just after the M4 motorway overpass and return the same way back to the The Local Shed for coffee/breakfast.

What kind of fitness level should I have?

As a guide you should be able to ride 30-40 km on your own within 1.5 - 2 hours. A great place to practice and check your fitness level is to ride the M7 cycleway.

What skills do I need?

Our skills session will provide you with the skills and confidence to ride in a bunch. You should have good bike handling skills and preferably some exposure to riding on the road and understanding of road rules.
